Have you ever wondered what is Stress Fracture? Few months back during ongoing series between India & Australia, Mitchell Starc a pacer from Australian Cricket Team returned to his home, leaving the series in midway after getting diagnosed from stress fracture. It was also believed many atheletes including Great Sachin Tendulkar also suffers from stress fracture. Here are some important facts about it.
1) Stress fracture does not occur due to direct injury but it is the fracture resulted due to overuse.
2) It is most prominently seen in ATHELETES doing repetitive running jumping activities. Observe Bowling action of Mitchell Starc👇. He put load in right foot just before he delivers the ball. This resulted in this overuse injury.
3) The most common sites of stress fractures are Metatarsal( foot bones) , ankle( navicular, calcaneus) bones, spine, tibia( leg bone).
4) March fracture(Metatarsal fracture) commonlyy seen in military soldiers.
5) Symptoms of fracture includes pain, localised swelling & tenderness after end of the activity. Clear Diagnosis confirmed after X ray investigation.
6) Fracture treatment may vary from (rest,compression,ice elevation) to surgery depends upon the grade in which it fall.
7) Wearing, tearing & injuries are common in ATHELETES. But one can prevent it if proper precautions are taken in order to avoid such kind of Fractures.
a) Divide equal weight on both the foots.
b) Avoid high intensity exercise for long duration.
c) Always perform stretching exercise of various muscles before play and practice.
d) Never be in haste to complete warm up session.
e) Shoes are critical. Select them carefully.
f) Get enough Vitamin D and calcium.
