1. Rota virus is a double stranded RNA virus which causes diarrhea in children. The virus enters into the body through the mouth and may cause life threatening condition.
2. Because this type of diarrhea is caused by a virus, it cannot be effectively treated with antibiotics as these drugs are there to treat diarrhea caused by bacteria.
3. To make a clear diagnosis, patient has to go for laboratory tests. It is the only way to confirm diagnosis of rota viral diarrhea.
4. According to a report in India itself 1 lakh Children died due to diarrhea every year. In 2014 nearly 80,000 children died due to rota viral diarrhea and lakhs of children hospitalized.
5. Launch of Rota virus vaccine in India is undoubtedly a ground breaking step as it is developed indigenously under a Public Private Partnership( PPP model), a Make In India initiative.
6. The vaccine developed by an Indian Firm 'Bharat Biotech' and will be initially introduced in 4 States (Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Odisha).
7. The ministry of health also planning to introduce 3 other vaccines under Universal Immunization Program ( the largest Public health initiative in the country). This will include Inactivated polio virus Vaccine, Measles, Rubella vaccine and Adult Japanese Encephalitis vaccine.
8. WHO praised India for launch of Rotavirus vaccine and called an "immensely important" step for the health and well-being of country's children.
